The best public data on this is the annual Cost vs. Value report. Its 2025 edition covers 28 remodeling projects in 119 markets, and it has a page for Los Angeles. Valencia has no page of its own, so Los Angeles is the closest published market, not a measurement of your street.

What the report found for Los Angeles

The report compares what a project costs with the resale value it adds, and calls the ratio the cost recouped. In the Los Angeles table, a minor midrange remodel cost $29,765 and added $37,768 at resale, 126.9 percent of its cost. A major midrange remodel cost $86,214 and added $49,079, or 56.9 percent. A major upscale remodel cost $171,369 and added $65,023, or 37.9 percent.

How to read that

The pattern is the point. In these figures the smaller the scope, the more of it comes back, and every step up in scope returns a smaller share of what it cost. The report counts a project as one with a fixed definition, so check what each project includes before you compare it with a quote for your own kitchen.

These are metro averages from the report, not an appraisal of your house, so read them as a direction and not as a price.

What that means for a seller

If the goal is a sale and not a kitchen you will live in, the figures favor a tighter scope: fix what a buyer would notice, keep the layout, and stay out of the structure and the plumbing where you can. That also keeps you out of most of the permit work, since countertops and cabinets are exempt from a building permit while the wiring and plumbing are not.

If you are planning to stay a few more years, the same money goes further spent on the kitchen you want, and the cost page lays out the ranges by scope.

Get the quote before the listing date

A kitchen job has lead times for cabinets and counters, so decide early whether the work happens before you list. A written line item quote lets you compare the cost of each piece with what it is likely to return, and decide piece by piece.

Price the scope before you decide

The contractor measures the kitchen and writes the quote line by line, so you can see which pieces earn their cost.
